Raksha Bandhan Religious Beliefs: The festival of Rakshabandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon date of Shravan month, which this year will be celebrated on 28 August 2026. This is the festival of love between brother and sister. On this day, sisters tie Rakhi on the wrists of brothers and apply tilak on their forehead.
But many times, in some special circumstances or as a promise of protection, wives tie Rakhi to their husbands. Now the question is, can a wife tie Rakhi to her husband on Rakshabandhan? What is the importance of the question of wife tying Rakhi to her husband from the point of view of tradition, scriptures and society, is it as per the scriptures?
Tying Rakhi in the tradition of Rakshabandhan has a deep religious and cultural significance. Rakhi is a sacred thread which a sister ties on her brother’s wrist. This Rakhi is not only a symbol of protection but also a wish for the sister’s longevity, prosperity and happiness. This relationship between brother and sister is based on affection, trust and promise to protect each other.
There is a strict prohibition in the scriptures for the wife to tie Rakhi to her husband. The marital relationship between husband and wife is associated with conjugal love and dedication. On the contrary, the bond of Rakhi is considered a symbol of the selfless, sacred and loving relationship between brother and sister.
If a wife ties Rakhi to her husband, it is considered a violation of the decorum and social tradition of relationships. From astrological and classical point of view, tying Rakhi to the husband can destroy the marital relationship between them. Due to which there may also be obstacles in marital life.
In Hindu religion, there is no mention of the wife tying Rakhi to her husband anywhere in the Puranas. There is a description of Rakshabandhan in the Bhavishya Purana, in which Indra’s wife Shachi tied Rakshasutra to him to win the war, but this reference was more to the god-demon war than the relationship between husband and wife.
The story of Draupadi tying Rakhi to Shri Krishna is also prevalent in the Mahabharata, but here the purpose of Rakhi was to security and prosperity and not to married life.
