Andrey Santos has officially completed his much-anticipated £50 million transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United, marking Michael Carrick’s first major signing as head coach. The Brazilian midfielder’s arrival at Old Trafford signals a bold new chapter for the Red Devils’ midfield setup.

Manchester United have confirmed the acquisition of 22-year-old Brazil international Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The talented midfielder has signed a long-term contract until June 2031, with the club holding an option to extend for an additional year. His signing represents the beginning of a fresh era under Michael Carrick’s leadership at the Theatre of Dreams.

According to The Athletic, United have agreed to pay a package worth £48 million upfront plus £2 million in performance-related bonuses. The deal also includes a 10 percent sell-on clause in favour of Chelsea. The Blues agreed to the transfer after Santos expressed a desire for regular first-team football, particularly following Moises Caicedo’s recent contract renewal.

Fulfilling a 'dream' under Carrick’s guidance

The transfer represents a major statement from Carrick, who had prioritised strengthening the midfield this summer. Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, Santos said, “Everything about Manchester United is special; joining a club where some of my biggest idols have played is an incredible feeling. Renowned for his composure and technical ability, Santos impressed during his 43 appearances for Chelsea last season. He recorded the highest pass completion rate and the most progressive passes per 90 minutes among Premier League midfielders aged 22 or under.

Rebuilding United’s midfield foundation

This signing arrives at a crucial moment for Manchester United, who have experienced instability in their midfield. With Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte sidelined due to a serious knee injury, Carrick was keen to reinforce the team’s core. Santos is expected to play a pivotal role in a revamped midfield that could also feature Youri Tielemans, as Carrick works to create a side capable of dictating the tempo and controlling matches more effectively.

Though still young, Santos is no stranger to top-level football. He has captained Brazil at multiple youth levels and lifted the Club World Cup trophy in 2025. His adaptability allows him to play as either a No.6 or No.8, offering Carrick tactical flexibility as United aim to re-establish themselves at the pinnacle of English football.

During his loan spell at Strasbourg, Santos demonstrated his attacking prowess by scoring 11 goals and providing five assists.
