The Men’s 2027 ODI World Cup dates are getting closer, and the excitement among fans is already rising. However, there is a recent development around the tournament that has come into the limelight as the International Cricket Council (ICC) is discussing reducing the team size from 14 to 12 for the upcoming edition.
The development was reported by a cricket journalist named Tristan Lavalette on Tuesday, July 14, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to him, the proposal is currently under discussion despite the supreme governing body, the ICC, confirming in 2021 that the 2027 edition in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia would feature 14 participating teams.

The previous two editions of the ODI World Cup in 2019 and 2023 had 10 teams, and it was confirmed by the ICC in November 2021 that the upcoming edition will feature 14 teams.
Tristan Lavalette on his X handle posted:
"There are discussions to cut back the 2027 ODI World Cup to 12 teams. The ICC announced in 2021 that the 2027 event would have 14 teams. There were discussions at the time of a 16-team World Cup after the 2019 and 2023 editions only had 10."
Under the existing qualification system, co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have automatically qualified for the tournament. Despite being the co-hosts, Namibia will have to go through the World Cup Qualifiers to seal their berth.
If the proposed structural changes are approved, the qualification structure announced by the ICC would need to be revised. A 12-team tournament would mean two fewer teams participating, making the grand event considerably tougher for lower-ranked Associate sides.
However, there is no official confirmation regarding the changes as of now. The document lists the tournament as a 14-team tournament and shall proceed if no changes are made. The 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 4 to November 21, 2027, across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
