Atalanta have been left ‘stunned’ after Manchester United unexpectedly pulled out of their agreement to sign midfielder Ederson, with the Italian club now confirming that the player is content to stay and that discussions are already underway for a new deal.
The transfer, valued at €45 million including add-ons, had been finalised last month but was set to be completed only after Ederson concluded his involvement with Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
Upon his return from the tournament, Manchester United subjected the midfielder to extensive medical examinations before abruptly cancelling the move, citing concerns over significant knee issues discovered during the tests.
“We were stunned,” revealed Atalanta’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli during a press conference earlier today. “He is happy to remain and we are working on a new contract.”
Ederson’s relatively modest price tag was due to his existing contract with Atalanta expiring at the end of the current season. However, following the breakdown of the transfer to Old Trafford, the 27-year-old is now prepared to sign an extension to continue his stay in Bergamo.
The Brazilian midfielder first joined Atalanta in 2022 from Salernitana for €22.9 million, having previously moved there from Corinthians just six months earlier. Since his arrival, he has become a key figure for the club, contributing significantly to their recent successes.
Ederson played a vital role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph, lifting the trophy after a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the final held at the Dublin Arena on May 22, 2024. He has also helped the team reach two Coppa Italia finals, amassing 16 goals and six assists across 180 competitive appearances.
