Arsenal have officially presented young German forward Lisa Baum as their fifth addition of the summer, signing her for a substantial six-figure amount that reportedly marks a record sale for RB Leipzig. The 19-year-old, who had attracted attention from several European giants including Barcelona, Lyon, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United, will now strengthen Arsenal’s wings following the departure of England international Beth Mead.
Arsenal were considered favourites for Baum’s signature once reports surfaced about her possible transfer after just one season with Leipzig. On Tuesday, the Gunners confirmed her arrival as their new No.19, following Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Geraldine Reuteler, and Selina Cerci in what has been an impressive summer of recruitment for the club.
“I’m thrilled to join Arsenal and can’t wait to get started,” said Baum, who has signed a three-year contract with an option for an additional season. “This league is extremely competitive and Arsenal is such a big club, so I’m excited to challenge myself and compete with the best. I want to win trophies and continue developing my game, and Arsenal feels like the perfect place to do that.”
Head coach Renee Slegers expressed her enthusiasm about the new signing, stating: “Lisa is a young wide forward who brings directness and athleticism to our attacking unit. At just 19, she’s still evolving, and we believe she has tremendous potential, which we’ll help her achieve.”
RB Leipzig officials also had high praise for Baum upon her departure. Viola Odebrecht, head of women’s and girls’ football, commented: “Lisa’s readiness to take this next step highlights the incredible progress she’s made in such a short time. This transfer is a positive outcome for all parties. We’re proud to have supported her on part of her journey and wish her all the best at Arsenal, both on and off the field.”
Leipzig manager Jonas Stephan added: “If she continues developing at this rate, Lisa will become a world-class player, among the best in her position.”
Baum may not yet be a household name, but she has earned growing recognition within Germany’s youth setup. Her breakout season came in 2024–25, when she played a crucial role in Hamburg’s promotion to the Frauen-Bundesliga. Hamburg also made a remarkable run to the DFB Pokal semi-finals as a second-division side, only losing heartbreakingly in extra time to Werder Bremen, who scored in the 117th and 121st minutes before a crowd of 57,000 at the Volksparkstadion.
Her standout performances drew interest from Bayern Munich last year, but Baum opted to join RB Leipzig, where she expected more playing time. The move proved wise, as she flourished with six goals and two assists while showcasing blistering pace and technical flair for a Leipzig side that finished tenth in the Bundesliga.
Those displays attracted the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs, leading to her move to Arsenal, where she now steps onto one of the grandest stages in women’s football — the Women’s Super League and the UEFA Champions League.
Arsenal’s record in developing young external signings has been under scrutiny in recent years. In 2022, the club brought in Brazilian forward Gio Queiroz from Barcelona at age 19, but she struggled to make an impact despite scoring nine goals in 16 appearances on loan at Madrid CFF. A year later, Danish teenager Kathrine Kuhl joined from Nordsjaelland after breaking into Denmark’s senior team, yet she too was unable to secure a regular place and departed after two seasons. Swedish playmaker Rosa Kafaji, who signed in 2024, also spent last year on loan at Brighton due to limited opportunities in North London.
However, Smilla Holmberg’s successful integration since her January arrival offers hope that Baum’s path could follow a similar trajectory. With Beth Mead’s move to Manchester City creating space on the wing, Baum is expected to see ample playing time. Coach Slegers frequently rotates her wide players both between and during matches, which should allow Baum to adapt to the pace of the Women’s Super League and the Champions League while making an immediate impact.
Baum’s arrival further strengthens what has been a standout transfer window for Arsenal. England’s Georgia Stanway and Switzerland’s Geraldine Reuteler have joined to bolster the midfield and reduce the load on Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey. At the back, Spanish full-back Ona Batlle adds world-class depth following Katie McCabe’s departure, while Baum and former Hoffenheim striker Selina Cerci will add creativity and versatility in attack.
Arsenal remain the most decorated women’s club in English football and the only English side ever to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League. However, they have not lifted the Women’s Super League title since 2019. With this ambitious recruitment drive, supporters have renewed confidence that the title drought could finally end this season.
