Thomas Tuchel has sought to end speculation about any discord within the England squad, asserting that there are "no cracks" in his relationship with Jude Bellingham. The Three Lions manager insisted the two share a strong connection, describing them as "closer than ever," despite the Real Madrid midfielder’s recent public reaction to Tuchel’s post-match remarks following England’s dramatic World Cup quarter-final win over Norway.

Tuchel blames media for amplifying rumours

The dynamic between the German coach and his star player came under renewed scrutiny after Tuchel’s mother had previously criticised some of Bellingham’s on-field behaviour, labelling it as "repulsive" last summer. Although an apology was issued later, tension resurfaced once again following England’s 2-1 extra-time victory against Norway. Despite the win, Tuchel admitted he was "not satisfied with the team performance," which prompted Bellingham to call for a more positive outlook.

The England boss disclosed that he met with the entire squad the following day to clear the air and ensure everything was settled before their semi-final clash against Argentina. Tuchel remarked, "I really wonder who blows these things up, eh? There’s nothing to blow up, and if it’s blown up, it’s obviously in the media."

Defending Bellingham against 'unfair' questioning

Tuchel was quick to defend Bellingham’s emotional response, stressing the exhaustion and intensity of playing 120 minutes in a high-stakes knockout match. He explained, "What do you expect from a player who’s just played 120 minutes and given absolutely everything, if you shorten his coach’s comment? If you don’t tell him that 'he was world class' or that 'he had world class moments,' and instead just say, 'your coach said you were sloppy,' what do you expect?"

He continued, "Of course, you’ll get the kind of reaction that you get. Then people want to blow it up and create misunderstandings or cracks where none exist. We’re both highly competitive — I push this team to its limits, and that was simply my assessment."

Tuchel also criticised the line of questioning directed at Bellingham, calling it unfair. "The question was unfair in that moment because it left out all the compliments from my assessment and only focused on the criticisms. What do you expect from a player who’s just given everything and is immediately put in front of a microphone for a flash interview?"

Responding to Bellingham’s remark about his playing career

During his post-match comments, Bellingham appeared to take a dig at Tuchel’s modest playing career, suggesting: "Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kinds of conditions" or face players of Erling Haaland’s calibre. However, Tuchel dismissed any notion that his lack of a top-level playing career undermines his credibility as a coach. He reaffirmed that his relationship with the 23-year-old remains as strong as ever.

"It’s just how it is, but we’re as close as ever — perhaps even closer than before," Tuchel stated. "You can see that on the pitch. The energy and spirit in the camp have been fantastic over the past few days, and we’re ready to give our all tomorrow."

Tuchel reflects on his journey and humility

Looking back on his rise to managing England, Tuchel admitted that he still feels a sense of humility given his path to the top. "I would still have loved to have had a player’s career — that was always my dream," said the former Chelsea manager. "I never imagined becoming a coach, let alone at this level. So yes, this really is a dream come true. Even now, when I stand on the sideline, I sometimes think, ‘I couldn’t have been out there playing in a match like this.’"

Tuchel further added that tactical intelligence and leadership are not dependent on one’s playing background. He concluded with a smile, "I don’t think you need to have been a player to be a good coach. As the saying goes, you don’t have to be a horse to be a good jockey!"
