Bihar Homestay Scheme: If you live in Bihar and have spare rooms in your home, here is a fantastic opportunity to earn money from them. The Bihar government has launched the 'Mukhyamantri Homestay Protsahan Yojana 2026' (Chief Minister's Homestay Incentive Scheme 2026). Under this scheme, individuals can prepare spare rooms in their homes to accommodate tourists. In return, the government will provide financial assistance and support in setting up the homestay.
What is the Chief Minister's Homestay Scheme?
The objective of the Mukhyamantri Homestay Protsahan Yojana 2026 is to boost tourism in Bihar and provide people with employment opportunities right from their homes. Under this scheme, locals can convert extra rooms in their houses into homestays where domestic and international tourists can stay. This offers tourists the chance to stay with local residents instead of in hotels, allowing them to experience the local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle up close.
Who is eligible for the homestay scheme?
The benefits of this scheme are available to those whose homes are located within a five-kilometer radius of government-selected tourist destinations. Such individuals can start a homestay in their homes. A homeowner can prepare up to a maximum of eight rooms for tourists.
How much financial assistance will the government provide?
The Bihar government will provide financial assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh per room to set up the homestay. An individual can receive a maximum grant of up to ₹10 lakh. If the homestay is started by a female entrepreneur, a self-help group, or a youth aged between 18 and 25, they will receive an additional incentive of ₹25,000 per room.
How can one earn money from home?
If your home is near a designated tourist spot, you can prepare your spare rooms to accommodate tourists. Once the rooms are set up according to government-prescribed standards, you will receive approval from the Bihar Tourism Department. Subsequently, your homestay will be listed on the Tourism Department's portal, allowing tourists to book your homestay directly. This provides an opportunity to earn income from your home without the need to build a new hotel.
Which districts and tourist destinations have been included?
The Bihar government has selected 34 major tourist destinations across 16 districts for this scheme. These include the Mahabodhi Temple, Vishnupad Temple, Dungeshwari Temple, Pret Shila, and Gurpa Hill in Gaya district. In Nalanda district, the Nalanda Mahavihara, Pawapuri Jal Mandir, Rajgir Ropeway, Zoo Safari, Nature Safari, and Rajgir Kund have been included.
Vaishali’s Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Kaimur’s Mundeshwari Temple, East Champaran’s Kesaria Stupa and Sita Kund, and Rohtas’s Sher Shah Suri Tomb, Manjhar Kund, and Dhua Kund are also part of this scheme.
Additionally, the selected destinations include West Champaran’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve and Gandhi Ashram Bhitiharwa; Jehanabad’s Barabar Caves; Nawada’s Kakolat Waterfall; Banka’s Mandar Hill and Odhni Dam; Muzaffarpur’s Manikaman Lake and Garibnath Dham; Munger’s Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary; Sitamarhi’s Punaura Dham and Panth Pakar; Jamui’s Lachhuar Jain Temple and Nayi Nakti Dam; and Aurangabad’s Deo Sun Temple.
How will the general public benefit from this scheme?
This scheme will provide local residents with a new source of income right in their own homes. Furthermore, tourists visiting Bihar will have the opportunity to stay with local families in addition to hotels. The government believes this will boost tourism, increase people's incomes, and create new employment opportunities for the youth and women.
