On Thursday, Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar organized by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) to express his support for Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike. While honoring Wangchuk, Kejriwal remarked that this activist is willing to risk his life for the students of the nation and even proposed that he should be appointed as the next Minister of Education. Kejriwal urged the removal of Dharmendra Pradhan and suggested that Wangchuk should take over the education ministry.
Recalling his 2011 movement alongside Anna Hazare, Kejriwal stated that the Prime Minister fears Wangchuk's potential for revolutionary change. Wangchuk and the 'Cockroach People's Party' are protesting at the site, demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister due to the NEET exam paper leak incident. Kejriwal emphasized that Wangchuk is a highly respected academic and noted that he has previously undertaken hunger strikes for the cause of Ladakh.
Addressing the crowd at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal expressed that the paper leaks have severely undermined students' confidence. He shared his own experience of passing the IIT entrance exam and mentioned that both of his children studied at the same institution. The former Chief Minister of Delhi highlighted that competitive exams represent a dream for students, who enter the examination hall with the hope of shaping their futures through hard work. He also described the paper leaks as 'dangerous for the country.'
Kejriwal criticized the bail granted to those accused of the leaks and cited the main accused in the 2024 paper leak case as an example. He urged the government to listen to the youth and the concerns raised by the Cockroach Party, asserting that systemic changes are necessary to prevent student suicides.
The national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party appealed to citizens across the country to join the march to Parliament organized by the CJP on July 20. Alongside Kejriwal was Saurabh Bhardwaj, a former Delhi minister, who also encouraged people to participate in the march. While demanding the resignation of the education minister, Bhardwaj took a jab at the BJP-led government, humorously suggesting that if they remove Pradhan, they should not appoint Smriti Irani as the new education minister.
