Genesis is preparing to introduce its all-new flagship SUV, the GV90, which aims directly at the Range Rover with a bold design featuring Rolls-Royce-inspired coach doors, a wooden floor, and an expansive in-car cinema screen.

With its launch just weeks away, the GV90 will take its place at the top of Genesis’s line-up, representing the most luxurious offering from Hyundai’s premium arm. The SUV will debut around the same time as the GV60 Magma, the first in a new range of high-performance models that showcase the brand’s sporting ambition.

Peter Kronschnabl, Managing Director of Genesis Europe, confirmed that the GV90 will fully express the brand’s luxury capabilities. He stated, “You need to show what you can do at the top luxury end, and this is the GV90.”

One of the standout design features of the GV90 will be its rear-hinged, Rolls-Royce-style doors, which are expected to make a strong visual statement. Kronschnabl also revealed that the SUV will feature a large ‘theatre screen’ for rear-seat entertainment, alongside advanced technology and high-end materials that will make it the pinnacle of the Genesis range.

Spy images suggest that the GV90 will be a substantial vehicle, even larger than the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, with which it shares its electric platform. The design will closely follow the Genesis Neolun concept, which previewed the SUV’s bold proportions and included the same rear-hinged door setup.

Reports indicate that the standard configuration will include three rows of two seats, while Korean media have spotted prototypes of an ultra-luxurious four-seat version. This top-end model is said to feature individual rear seats, quilted leather, and wooden flooring, enhancing its premium appeal.

Patent filings in the United States reveal a sophisticated dual-hinge mechanism for the rear doors, attached to both the body and the frame. The setup includes extra seals to improve rigidity and cabin insulation, ensuring both safety and comfort.

The GV90 is expected to come with an electric powertrain featuring a battery pack of around 110kWh, delivering a driving range exceeding 350 miles. Dual electric motors are anticipated to produce more than 500bhp and provide all-wheel-drive capability. Charging speeds are expected to reach over 350kW, placing the GV90 among the fastest-charging luxury EVs available.

In addition to the GV90, Genesis is also gearing up to expand its performance division with the Magma sub-brand. The first model, the GV60 Magma, is a 641bhp electric crossover capable of accelerating from 0–62mph in just 3.4 seconds and reaching a top speed of 164mph. Kronschnabl explained that Magma will play a key role in the company’s expansion, positioning Genesis alongside performance divisions like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.

He added that Magma’s uniqueness will come from making electric cars truly “feel alive,” despite lacking internal combustion engines, and from using exceptional materials in its interiors to create a distinct luxury experience.

While both the GV90 and GV60 Magma will be fully electric, Genesis plans to maintain a diverse electrified line-up, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and range-extender powertrains. However, the brand will no longer produce purely internal combustion engine models.

“From customer sentiment and feedback, you cannot limit yourself to one powertrain,” said Kronschnabl.

The GV70 SUV is expected to become the first hybrid model in the Genesis portfolio, having already been spotted undergoing prototype testing. The brand’s first range-extender (REx) model has not been confirmed yet, but the GV90 is seen as a strong candidate due to the suitability of such a setup for a large, luxury SUV.
