Spain are set to take on Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday, with young sensations Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi ready to etch their names into football history by becoming the latest teenagers to feature in the sport’s most celebrated match.
The Barcelona pair will be hoping to join an elite list of players who have graced the World Cup final before reaching the age of 20.
Here’s a look at all the footballers who have played in World Cup finals as teenagers.
Rubén Morán’s brief but memorable World Cup journey came in 1950 when he made his tournament debut for Uruguay in the final against Brazil. At just 19, Morán delivered a confident performance as Uruguay stunned the hosts 2-1 at the Maracanã in front of a crowd of 173,000, an event forever remembered as the ‘Maracanazo’.
One of football’s all-time greats, Pelé, was already a national hero in Brazil by the 1958 World Cup. At only 17, he had announced himself to the world by scoring against Wales in the quarter-finals. He then netted a hat-trick versus France in the semi-finals, setting up a final against hosts Sweden. Pelé scored twice in that match, leading Brazil to their maiden World Cup triumph.
Giuseppe Bergomi, considered among Italy’s finest defenders, began the 1982 quarter-final against Brazil as a substitute. His impressive showing earned him a starting role in the semi-final against Poland, which Italy won 2-0. At 19, Bergomi retained his place in the line-up for the final against West Germany, where Italy emerged victorious with a 3-1 win.
The most recent teenager to shine on the biggest stage is Kylian Mbappé, who made his mark at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Paris Saint-Germain forward played a pivotal role in leading France to their first title in two decades. Mbappé set multiple records, including becoming France’s youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer after finding the net against Peru in the group stage. He finished the tournament with four goals, including one in the 4-2 final win over Croatia, becoming only the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final.
Several other Brazilians were part of World Cup final squads as teenagers but did not appear on the pitch. José Altafini, aged 19 during the 1958 tournament, scored twice against Austria before suffering an injury against England. He returned for the quarter-final against Wales but missed both the semi-final and final due to the no-substitution rule in place at the time. Coutinho, expected to start in the 1962 edition, was sidelined by injury before the tournament began, though he remained with the team as Brazil retained their crown.
At 19, Marco Antônio was part of Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning squad, featuring in two games but not in the final as Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in Mexico City. Ronaldo Nazário, selected at just 17 for the 1994 World Cup, did not play in any matches, though Brazil went on to win their fourth title.
