Madan Lal, a former cricketer for India, has advised fans and the cricket community to refrain from making hasty judgments regarding Rohit Sharma's future in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He emphasized that any decision regarding the veteran player's retirement would be a personal matter.
There has been rampant speculation that the upcoming ODI against England at Lord's could mark Rohit's final appearance in the 50-over format. However, both Rohit and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have yet to issue any formal statements about his retirement.
In response to the increasing chatter, Madan Lal noted that there is still no definitive information available, despite rumors of conversations between selectors and the former captain. He stated, "Rohit Sharma has not publicly commented on this matter, but I am unsure of the discussions he may have had with the selectors. It is likely that the Indian selectors have communicated with him, but no concrete news has emerged. Ultimately, the decision will be his own, as it is a personal choice."
Should Rohit choose to retire from ODIs, it would conclude an illustrious international career that has lasted nearly 19 years. The 39-year-old made his ODI debut against Ireland on June 23, 2007, and has already retired from both T20I and Test formats.
The conversation about his retirement has intensified during the current series against England, where Rohit has faced challenges with his batting. In the first two ODIs, he scored 11 and 26 runs, totaling 241 runs in eight matches this year, averaging 30.12, with a top score of 79.
Reports suggest that India's selectors have informed Rohit prior to the England series that he is not part of their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, as they aim to develop younger opening batsmen ahead of the tournament in Africa. The selectors have reportedly left the final decision regarding his future to Rohit, who has not yet communicated his intentions to the BCCI or team management.
The speculation grew after Rohit's performance in the second ODI at Cardiff, where he scored 26 runs, following a disappointing 11 in the series opener at Edgbaston. Despite the scrutiny, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has dismissed claims of pressure on Rohit, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver a stronger performance in the decisive match at Lord's.
Discussions about Rohit's future reportedly began during IPL 2026, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also participating in these talks. Earlier this year, Rohit became the oldest male cricketer to represent India in ODIs, surpassing Mohinder Amarnath's record during the ODI against Afghanistan in Dharamsala.
