Patna (Bihar) [India], July 24: In a significant move, the Bihar government has appointed fast bowler Mukesh Kumar as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under its 'Medal Lao Naukri Pao' initiative, aimed at motivating athletes throughout the state to strive for excellence.
Mukesh received his official appointment from Bihar's Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhary, during a ceremony in Patna. Another cricketer, Akash Deep, was also named a DSP under this sports recruitment program.
After the event, Mukesh expressed his gratitude for the government's initiative, emphasizing its potential to inspire budding athletes. He stated, “I, along with all the Biharis, are very happy with this. This will encourage all the athletes who are working hard. Work hard and stay positive.”
The 32-year-old right-arm seamer hails from Gopalganj and represents India in international cricket, plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, and competes for Bengal in domestic matches. He made his debut in Test, ODI, and T20I formats during India's tour of the West Indies in 2023, achieving the rare feat of debuting in all three formats within just two weeks.
Mukesh has been a vital part of the Delhi Capitals' bowling lineup. After being acquired for Rs 5.50 crore before IPL 2023, he emerged as the franchise's joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2024 season, claiming 17 wickets. He was subsequently retained for Rs 8 crore at the mega auction using the Right to Match (RTM) card.
The 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' policy, as outlined by the Bihar State Sports Authority, offers direct government employment to athletes who secure medals in national and international events. This scheme allows exceptional sportspersons to be appointed to positions like Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sub-Inspector, and Panchayati Raj Officer without the need for traditional competitive exams.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary shared images from the ceremony, reaffirming the state government's dedication to discovering sporting talent, enhancing sports infrastructure, and providing athletes with opportunities to shine and bring honor to Bihar and India.
