Short-video platform TikTok has once again come under regulatory scrutiny. The European Commission has stated that the company failed to adequately protect the privacy of minors on its platform. According to the Commission, this shortcoming allowed adult users to view children's accounts, thereby compromising both their safety and privacy.

**Increased Risk of Cyberbullying and Exploitation**
In its preliminary investigation, the European Commission found that TikTok's settings and safety measures were insufficient to fully secure children's profiles. Consequently, minor users were exposed to serious risks such as cyberbullying, unwanted contact, and exploitative behavior.

The Commission maintains that child safety on digital platforms must be a top priority and that companies are required to adhere to strict regulations in this regard.

**TikTok to Get an Opportunity to Respond**
The European Commission has presented its preliminary findings to TikTok. The company will now be allowed to present its side and respond to these allegations.
If the Commission is not satisfied with TikTok's response, it could take action against the company for non-compliance. This could result in a fine of up to 6% of TikTok's total global annual revenue.

**Previous Serious Allegations**
This is not the first time TikTok has faced scrutiny from the European Union. Earlier this year, the EU accused the company of violating its digital service regulations.

At that time, the Commission noted that features such as autoplay and endless scrolling were designed to keep users glued to their screens for extended periods. These features, particularly for children and adolescents, could have negative impacts on mental and physical health.

**EU Continues Crackdown on Big Tech**
In recent years, the European Union has consistently taken a tough stance against major global tech companies. Meta, Apple, and other global tech firms have also faced investigations and enforcement actions under European digital regulations. TikTok has now joined this list. If the company fails to satisfactorily address the European Commission's concerns, it may face heavy financial penalties as well as the need to make significant changes to its platform.
