Manchester United have chosen to keep Shea Lacey with the first-team group for the opening half of the season, with any loan switch pushed back until at least January after his eye-catching display in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg.

As reported by The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst, manager Michael Carrick wants the teenage attacking midfielder to remain at Carrington instead of being sent out, and United along with Lacey’s advisers are expected to review the situation in the new year before deciding whether a loan will be necessary.

Lacey was picked in the attacking midfield trio alongside Andrey Santos and Mason Mount and looked fully at home throughout. Just before the half-hour mark, he collected a pass from Joshua Zirkzee, carried the ball inside, and bent a finish past the Rosenborg goalkeeper with ease – Carrick’s first victory as United manager wrapped up in convincing style.

After the match, Carrick was clearly full of praise for the young players who took part, and Lacey’s performance will have only strengthened his case. The academy graduate had scored 10 goals in 14 Premier League 2 appearances for the United under-21s last season, numbers that had already underlined the argument for a higher level of challenge in his development.

Lacey’s progress stalled sharply in the second half of 2025-26. An FA Cup red card and a later injury left him out of action and denied him the chance to build on what had been a promising breakthrough under Ruben Amorim. He made his debut last December, went on to make three more appearances, and recorded one outing under Carrick – a substitute appearance on the final day against Brighton.

With those setbacks now behind him, the call to keep him in the senior setup rather than send him straight out on loan is being seen as a clear sign of trust. Luckhurst says United and Lacey’s camp are in agreement that he should be given the first half of the season to show he can operate at this level before any loan is looked at again in January.

Pre-season will offer Lacey more chances against steadily stronger opponents, and the minutes he gets once the competitive campaign starts will be the clearest indication of how fully he has settled into Carrick’s plans.
