Bank Locker Theft: Nowadays, most people do not consider it safe to keep cash, jewelry, and important documents at home. Consequently, they use bank lockers, believing their valuables will remain secure. Yet, if items are stolen from the very place deemed most secure, the potential loss is immense. Reports indicate that several cases of theft from public sector bank lockers have surfaced over the past few years.

Multiple Cases of Bank Locker Theft Reported

The government informed Parliament that 40 cases of theft from public sector bank lockers have been reported over the last five financial years, involving several states across the country. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of these cases.

Which Banks Reported the Most Cases?

According to government data, the highest number of theft cases were recorded in the following banks:

State Bank of India: 10 cases reported.
Bank of India: 14 cases reported.
Central Bank of India: 14 cases recorded.

UP Ranks First; Which State is Second?

According to information provided by the government in Parliament, theft cases from public sector bank lockers across various states were reported over the last five financial years (2021-22 to 2025-26). These include:

Uttar Pradesh: 18 cases reported.
Jharkhand: 12 cases (ranked second).
Maharashtra: 5 cases.
Andhra Pradesh: 1 case.
Bihar: 1 case.
Chhattisgarh: 1 case.
Gujarat: 1 case.
Haryana: 1 case recorded.

However, not a single case of bank locker theft has been reported so far in the 2025-26 financial year.

Are bank lockers completely safe?

People store their valuables in bank lockers to ensure their safety. Bank lockers are considered secure for storing valuables, with measures such as CCTV cameras, security guards, and robust locker systems in place to protect customers' belongings. However, they cannot be considered entirely risk-free. Therefore, if you are planning to use a bank locker, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the bank's rules beforehand.

Things to consider before renting a bank locker:

If your belongings are stolen from the locker or you suffer a loss due to the bank's negligence, you are entitled to only limited compensation.
Read the locker agreement carefully and keep a copy for your records.
Inquire about the security arrangements, such as the presence of security guards and CCTV cameras.
If you intend to store valuables in the locker, consider purchasing separate insurance for them.
If the locker remains unused for an extended period, the bank may take action in accordance with its rules.
Appoint a nominee when renting the locker to ensure your family does not face difficulties in the event of any untoward incident.
