A recent case has come to light in which a 70-year-old man took constipation medication for nearly 20 years, but found no relief. He was diagnosed with IBS (IBS-C) and continued to be treated.
But after specific tests, it was discovered that the cause wasn’t constipation, but rather obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS), a condition caused by prolonged sitting on the toilet and repeated straining. What’s most alarming is that this condition is increasing among young people. If you also have the habit of using your phone while sitting on the toilet, this news is meant to alert you.
This habit can slowly lead to serious illness, the treatment of which can range from expensive medications to specialized therapies. According to gastroenterologist Dr. Pranav Raghuvanshi, the problem isn’t caused by the mobile phone itself, but by sitting on the toilet seat for long periods of time while looking at the mobile phone.
Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, Dr. Raghuvanshi explained that this affects the body’s natural bowel reflex and leads to constipation. Sitting on the toilet for long periods of time puts extra pressure on the muscles of the rectum and anus.
Gradually, the person begins to exert more force than normal. This disrupts the coordination between the two muscles and can lead to a serious condition called obstructed defecation syndrome.
