Liverpool are reportedly prepared to step up their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, and new manager Andoni Iraola may already have provided an indication of how he believes the 23-year-old could fit into his set-up.

The Reds are said to be getting ready to submit an opening transfer offer for Barcola, with some reports claiming the reigning back-to-back European champions could be willing to let him join Anfield in a deal worth around £100 million.

Barcola moved to PSG from Lyon three years ago and has made a major impression, forcing his way into the national team picture while collecting enough Ligue 1 titles, Champions League final triumphs and domestic cup winner’s medals to satisfy most players over an entire career.

With little left to prove, Barcola and PSG now seem open to going their separate ways as both sides look towards fresh challenges. It is an exciting possibility for Reds supporters, although it also raises fresh uncertainty over the future of highly rated teenage winger Rio Ngumoha.

Ngumoha made his senior England debut before the World Cup, and the idea of reducing his minutes to accommodate a new signing is unlikely to be high on the list of what most Liverpool fans want to see this season.

Ngumoha scored the only goal in Liverpool’s friendly victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, and sharp-eyed observers pointed out that there would have been space for him in Iraola’s second-half line-up, which also included Curtis Jones, Jeremie Frimpong, Kieran Morrison and surprise returning loanee Harvey Elliott.

“The 17-year-old's deflected goal in New York kept up the team's perfect record so far and his deployment off the right, having played almost exclusively off the left previously, serves to highlight what could come next for Iraola,” The Mirror suggested.

“There have been clamours for Ngumoha to play more regularly, but he and Barcola, another left-sided forward, could've been in a scenario whereby they were battling for the same spot.

“Liverpool are ready to ramp up their interest in the PSG man, whose exit from the European Champions is looking all the more likely, and Ngumoha's impressive cameo off the right shows that he and the Frenchman could play in tandem either side of a striker, whoever that may be.”

Liverpool have already brought Victor Munoz into the squad, and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Barcola would be the right signing for a team that already has Ngumoha, Munoz and Cody Gakpo, but no Mohamed Salah.

“Liverpool's big thing that stands out like a sore thumb right now is replacing Mo Salah, a right winger,” Carragher told Sky Sports News.

“I don't think Liverpool have got anybody really in the squad who looks fully comfortable playing right wing.

“They probably have at least four players in the squad before Barcola joins, if he joins, who could play on the left-hand side comfortably.”
