Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has returned to the matchday squad and has been named among the substitutes for the Herons’ Eastern Conference clash with the Columbus Crew. Messi had not featured for the South Florida side since Argentina’s World Cup final defeat on July 19. His Argentina team-mate Rodrigo De Paul, however, went straight into the starting XI.

Messi is back in Miami’s squad after a two-week break following Argentina’s World Cup final defeat. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner returned to training earlier this week after missing the MLS All-Star Game during his time away.

The rest of the side, meanwhile, is edging closer to full strength. De Paul, who started the World Cup final and was an important player for his country throughout the tournament, was included in the starting XI. He links up with Brazilian great Casemiro for the first time, after the former Manchester United man made a strong impression in his MLS debut against Montreal.

Luis Suarez gets another opportunity

Saturday brought another opening for Luis Suarez, who has rediscovered his best form under new manager Guillermo Hoyos. The Uruguayan has scored six goals in his last three matches, including the late penalty that secured victory against Montreal last week. He has developed an understated but effective partnership in attack with DP striker German Berterame for the Herons.

Messi’s return comes as a major boost for Miami, who look set to compete on two fronts for the rest of the season. After Saturday night, attention will shift to Wednesday’s meeting with Atletico San Luis as part of a busy Leagues Cup schedule.
