Newcastle United are close to officially announcing their fifth major addition of the summer transfer window after highly rated goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek completed his medical in Spain. This latest step follows initial reports from the Portuguese media on Saturday, which indicated that the goalkeeper was on his way to La Manga to complete the remaining formalities. An official announcement for the Czech Republic international is now believed to be very close.

Once the move is formally confirmed, Hornicek will become Newcastle United’s fifth signing of the summer, after Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba. The £25.7m fee will push the club’s total spending this summer beyond the £150m mark.

The goalkeeper secured this move after a breakthrough season in which he helped Sporting Braga finish fourth in domestic competition and reach the Europa League semi-finals. He recorded 24 clean sheets in all competitions. Hull City activated his release clause earlier this summer, but he rejected their offer. As a result, he was left out of the matchday squad for Thursday’s 4-0 victory over Zeleznicar Pancevo.
