Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has heaped praise on Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra, calling him the "best cricketing brain" he has come across during his playing career. Having shared dressing rooms with several renowned captains and coaches across international cricket and franchise leagues, Moeen said Nehra's understanding of the game stood out during their time together at Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL.

The two worked together in the 2018 and 2019 seasons when Nehra served as RCB's bowling coach. According to Moeen, the former India fast bowler possessed an exceptional ability to analyse different match situations and offer well-thought-out solutions backed by logic and evidence.

Nehra's coaching journey has since grown significantly. After beginning at RCB, he took charge as Gujarat Titans' head coach in 2022 and guided the franchise to the IPL title in its debut season, becoming the first Indian head coach to win the tournament. GT have also remained among the league's most consistent teams, missing the playoffs only once in five seasons.

Moeen explains what sets Nehra apart

Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, Moeen explained what he believes defines a true cricketing brain. On Beard Before Wicket, Moeen said,

“For me, a cricketing brain is somebody who knows almost every situation of the game. Someone who’s got an answer—or a theory—for every situation. Like, they just talk about all aspects. ‘Why he’s not that good, why he is good, what should happen in this situation, what could happen."

The England all-rounder added that whether every idea succeeds on the field is not the most important aspect. Instead, he values the thought process and preparation behind those decisions.

'Amazing, amazing cricket brain'

Continuing his praise, Moeen highlighted that Nehra always had a reason behind his opinions and decisions, often supported by previous examples or data.

“But he’s got something," he added. “And behind that something, there’s either data or evidence. Like, ‘It’s happened before, and this happened, and this is why this can happen.’ So the name I am going to give is Ashish Nehra. He is the coach of Gujarat; I had him at RCB for a couple of years. When it comes to cricket brain, this guy knows what he’s talking about. Knows how to get a team environment going, knows how to deal with people, players, and coaches. Amazing, amazing cricket brain."

Moeen's remarks add to the growing appreciation Nehra has received for his coaching methods, particularly after transforming Gujarat Titans into one of the IPL's most competitive franchises since their debut in 2022.
