Arsenal's ambitious attempt to sign Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has run into a major obstacle after Jose Mourinho's return to the Bernabeu dugout. While the Premier League champions are keen to bring the Brazil forward to north London, the renowned Portuguese manager has reportedly made his position on the attacker's future absolutely clear.

Mourinho has told Real Madrid's hierarchy that Vinicius Junior is not for sale, despite ongoing speculation linking the winger with Arsenal. According to The Telegraph, the Portuguese coach wants to keep his core group intact, with Vinicius regarded as a crucial figure alongside Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. Arsenal are believed to be considering an ambitious move for the Brazil international. However, Mourinho has reportedly instructed the club to keep its most important players off the market as he looks to create stability.

Arsenal's interest in Vinicius reflects Mikel Arteta's wish for a more ambitious summer in the transfer market after last season's Champions League final defeat. Speaking after the loss to Paris Saint-Germain in May, Arteta said: "It is going to demand us to be very, very ambitious, very fast and very smart."

So far, though, Arsenal's transfer activity has not matched those lofty ambitions. They have signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer, but they missed out on Morgan Rogers after Chelsea won the race for his signature. Their interest in Vinicius highlights the club's intent, even if completing a deal of that scale would be extremely difficult.

The uncertainty around Vinicius is being driven by his current contract situation, with his deal due to expire in June next year. Talks over an extension have stalled, mainly because of the player's financial demands. It has been reported that Vinicius wants a salary close to that of Mbappe, a demand that could upset the wage structure at the Bernabeu. Even so, the Portuguese coach wants the Brazilian to stay in Madrid despite doubts over their relationship following last season's Gianluca Prestianni row.

Real Madrid must now decide how to manage Vinicius' contract situation in the coming months as they try to avoid the uncertainty of a player moving into the final phase of his deal. Mourinho's determination to keep the forward is likely to influence those discussions. Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to continue looking for attacking reinforcements while also working on player sales. Although their interest in Vinicius underlines their ambition, Mourinho's stance and the financial demands involved make any move exceptionally difficult.
