If you have missed your train, do not make the mistake of boarding the next train using the same ticket. Familiarize yourself with the essential rules regarding reserved tickets, TTEs, refunds, and TDRs.

Often, trains are missed due to haste or traffic. The immediate question that arises is: what now? Can you catch the next train using the same ticket? If you hold a reserved ticket, boarding another train without checking the rules could prove expensive.

A reserved ticket is issued for a specific train and a scheduled journey. This does not mean you can travel on a different train using the same ticket after missing your original one. Doing so could lead the TTE to charge you the fare for that specific train along with additional penalties.

Can you board another train if you have a reserved ticket?

No, generally you cannot. If you miss your reserved train and board another one with the same ticket, that ticket is not considered valid for the new train. In such a scenario, the TTE may treat you as a passenger traveling without a valid ticket, potentially resulting in charges for the fare and additional penalties. Therefore, do not board the next train simply because the ticket covers the same route.

What about general tickets?

General tickets offer slightly more flexibility, but that does not mean you can board just any train. The trains you can board depend on the ticket's validity and the type of train. If your ticket is not valid for a particular train and you board it, you may be charged extra or fined.

Will you lose your seat if you miss the boarding station?

If you fail to board the train at your scheduled station, it does not mean your seat will immediately be given to someone else. According to railway rules, the TTE generally does not reassign your seat to another passenger right away. You may still have the opportunity to board the train at a subsequent scheduled station along the route. Therefore, if your train has already departed from your station, instead of panicking and trying to catch a different train, it is better to look for a way to board the same train at a subsequent station.

Will you get a ticket refund if you miss the train?

Missing the train does not automatically entitle you to a ticket refund. Whether or not you receive a refund depends on the reason you could not travel and the specific railway rules applicable to that situation. A refund is possible in a particular scenario: if the train is delayed by more than three hours and the passenger decides not to travel on it, a claim for a refund can be made under the rules. Simply holding onto the ticket is not enough for this; in cases where refund rules apply, the passenger may also be required to submit a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) within the stipulated timeframe. If the TDR is not filed on time or if necessary conditions are not met, the refund claim may not be honored.
