Aston Villa were outclassed by Paris Saint-Germain as the back-to-back Champions League holders lifted the Super Cup with a 2-1 win in Salzburg.

Villa teenager Brian Madjo struck a superb equaliser on his debut to wipe out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener.

But Desire Doue’s decisive goal allowed Luis Enrique to celebrate a European ‘double-double’, with PSG becoming only the third club to successfully defend the trophy after AC Milan in 1990 and Real Madrid in 2017.

Unai Emery may be the master of the Europa League after winning it for a fifth time with Villa against Freiburg in May, but the Super Cup still remains beyond him.

That famous triumph in Istanbul – Villa’s first trophy in 30 years – gave the Spanish manager a fourth opportunity to win Europe’s season-opening showpiece, but he fell to a fourth defeat.

In reality, Villa, facing the star-studded French champions in the foothills of the Austrian Alps, were always up against it after selling key players Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans and leaving World Cup trio Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emi Martinez at home.

Not long after the solar eclipse had cast its shadow over the Red Bull Arena, Madjo emerged as Villa’s bright spark, though it ultimately turned into a disappointing night for the Premier League side.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead in the first half.

History was created as referee Omar Artan became the first non-European to take charge of the prestigious fixture, with the 34-year-old Somalian having been refused entry into the United States for the World Cup two months earlier.

One PSG player clearly not affected by any World Cup hangover was Kvaratskhelia, with the gifted Georgian winger having enjoyed the summer off.

He scored after 20 minutes, gliding into the Villa penalty area and skipping past Matty Cash before driving the ball beyond Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot.

Brian Madjo became the youngest goalscorer in Super Cup history with his equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Madjo was making his Villa debut after a prolonged dispute over FIFA rules following his January move from Metz, and the lively 17-year-old might well have completed a hat-trick before drawing Villa level.

He missed the target twice with headers from inviting John McGinn deliveries and then slid an effort beyond PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, only to see it rebound off the outside of the near post.

But Madjo kept at it and got his reward right on half-time – arguably from his toughest opportunity of the evening.

The young striker did brilliantly to hold off Willian Pacho at the far post, stretching out a leg to volley home another McGinn cross and become the youngest scorer in Super Cup history.

Desire Doue sealed the win for PSG with a fine finish past Marco Bizot.

Early in the second half, Madjo looked set to break through the PSG defence before slipping the ball to McGinn, whose shot was pushed away by Safonov.

PSG had needed penalties to beat Tottenham in last season’s Super Cup, but this time they settled it on the hour when Doue ran on to Ousmane Dembele’s pass over the top, cut inside and finished past Bizot.

The France wide player was initially flagged offside, but a VAR review showed he was onside, much to the frustration of Villa’s tiring players, as Les Parisiens – 74 days after beating Arsenal on penalties to win the Champions League – collected yet another trophy.
