PSG also lift the UEFA Super Cup: Aston Villa beaten 2-1 as Doué proves decisive and Madjo shines

The meeting between the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners was claimed by the French side.

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg to win the UEFA Super Cup, the traditional contest between the holders of the Champions League and the Europa League. Luis Enrique's reigning European champions faced Unai Emery's Villa side. PSG came into the match after winning last season's Champions League, their second successive title in the competition. Aston Villa were aiming to add one more trophy to complete an outstanding season. Both PSG and Aston Villa had previously won this competition once each: the French club triumphed in 2025 by beating Tottenham 6-5 on penalties, while the English side won it in 1982 after overcoming Barcelona in a two-legged final (0-1 and 3-0 after extra time). Somali referee Omar Artan officiated the match, having recently been dramatically ruled out of the World Cup after the United States refused him a visa to enter the country.

PSG secured the 2-1 win through one goal in each half from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose right-footed strike at medium height inside the near post left Bizot, starting in place of Dibu Martinez, looking unconvincing, and Désiré Doué, who timed his run right on the edge of offside. Villa's brief equaliser came right at the end of the first half through 17-year-old Madjo, the surprise performer of the night. PSG have now won the European Super Cup for the second time.
