Juventus are considering a move for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee as they look to add to their attacking options in the closing stages of the transfer window, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Any move by the Bianconeri for Zirkzee in this transfer window will depend on Jonathan David leaving Turin. The Canada international is viewed as surplus to requirements at Allianz Arena after only one season.
Zirkzee joined United from Bologna two seasons ago in a deal worth €42.5 million, but his spell at Old Trafford has largely failed to live up to expectations. Across 75 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, he has managed only nine goals and four assists.
The Netherlands international is currently on a gross annual salary of £5.46 million, and his contract with United runs until June 2029. It is understood that the Manchester club would be willing to consider even a loan deal for him before the transfer window closes.
There is not much blame that can be placed on Zirkzee, given that United arguably should never have signed him in the first place. He has instead become another very good player brought in by the club without a clear plan for how to use him.
With both sides now seemingly open to going their separate ways, a return to Italy appears to make perfect sense for Zirkzee, as that is where he has produced the best football of his career so far. Whether Juventus would be the ideal destination for him can certainly be debated, but under Luciano Spalletti he would have a coach whose tactical approach is better suited to the kind of football in which he excels.
Even if the chance to return to Serie A comes only through a loan move, it is an option Zirkzee should accept. And if Juventus are the only Italian club willing to offer him that route, then so be it.
