Many interesting and even surprising traditions can be seen in the folk culture of Maharashtra. 'Boricha Bar', celebrated on the second day of Nagpanchami in the two villages of Bori and Sukhed in Khandala taluk of Satara district, is one such festival of literally cursing each other.

History and legend

A story of a fight between two Savatis is told behind this festival, which has a tradition of hundreds of years. In the olden days, two Savatis living in the adjacent villages of Bori and Sukhed had a big fight due to their disagreement with each other. They died there while fighting by the side of a stream. With the passage of time, this practice of fighting took the form of folklore. There is no malice, enmity or enmity in this practice, it is considered a part of folk sport and entertainment.

Tradition and form

Every year, on the second day of Nagpanchami, the women of both the villages gather in large numbers at the stream that flows through the boundary of both the villages of Bori and Sukhed. Women reach the bank of the stream playing and singing songs to the beat of clarinet and halgi.

The main feature of this festival is standing on both banks of the stream or in the water where the women of the two villages shower each other with a storm of insults. This 'bar' of insults is fired with gestures, shouts, songs and applause. The game becomes more colorful by throwing water on each other in the stream. What is special is that without any heartache from this abuse, women forget all the stress of the year and enjoy it.
