Crystal Palace have taken a firm stand after turning down an approach from Manchester City for midfielder Adam Wharton. New Eagles boss Pierre Sage has made it clear to interested clubs that his key player will not be sold this summer.
Defending the star midfielder
Crystal Palace have underlined their position after rejecting an enquiry from Manchester City for Wharton. City have been assessing possible additions in midfield following Rodri's high-profile move to Barcelona in a £65.4m transfer.
But Palace's transfer decision-makers quickly closed down the approach and stated plainly that their prized midfielder is not available. The 22-year-old is still under contract at Selhurst Park until 2029 after joining from Blackburn Rovers in 2024 for £22.5m.
Sage insists Wharton stays put
New Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage has strongly supported the idea of the player remaining in south London for the coming season. Sage feels that another full year of development within the club's new set-up would be hugely beneficial for the England international.
“Now is not the moment to do that,” Sage told reporters while addressing the interest. “I think he is able to play for another club, a big club here or anywhere in Europe. But I think one year with us, one year with a new dynamic will be good for him. We need him and that’s why I think he will stay with us.”
Rapid rise and silverware
Wharton has enjoyed a remarkable rise since making his breakthrough and has already won four senior caps for the England national team. His outstanding displays have also played a major part in Palace winning notable silverware, including the FA Cup in 2024–25 and the UEFA Conference League in 2025–26.
That kind of success was always likely to draw interest from top clubs around Europe, and it comes at a time when City have been carefully refreshing their squad this summer. Along with bringing in Elliot Anderson, City have overseen player changes involving Nathan Ake, James Trafford, and Tijjani Reijnders.
Looking ahead to the campaign
With Palace refusing to budge on their valuation and long-term plans, Wharton is expected to have a central role in the club's upcoming matches. Sage's clear and emphatic backing means the midfielder can now concentrate fully on his responsibilities with the club without continued transfer noise.
As the transfer window moves towards its close, Palace's determination looks set to keep their core squad together. Supporters can now look forward to watching their star playmaker dictate matters in midfield for at least one more year.
