West Ham United have underlined their ambition to the rest of the Championship by breaking the division's transfer record to sign Arne Engels from Celtic. The Belgium international has joined the London Stadium club for a huge £22 million as the Hammers push for an instant return to the top flight.

A landmark deal for the Hammers

West Ham United have formally completed the signing of Engels from Celtic, sealing an agreement that establishes a new financial high in the second tier of English football. The 22-year-old Belgium international has arrived at the London Stadium on a five-year contract after the Hammers agreed to pay £22m, a figure the club specifically described as a 'record fee paid by an EFL Championship club.'

By bringing in Engels, West Ham have gone beyond the previous record set by Ipswich Town, who spent £17.5m to sign Norwegian forward Sindre Walle Egeli just a year ago. With such a major outlay, the East London side have sent a strong statement to the rest of their promotion challengers.

Building a squad for promotion

Engels comes to London with an impressive background after a very successful spell in Scotland. During his time at Celtic, the versatile midfielder, who can also play at right-back or on the right wing, won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles. His rise began at Club Brugge, and a productive period with German club Augsburg came before his switch to Glasgow in August 2024.

Nils Koppen, West Ham’s director of player recruitment, said he was delighted to secure a long-term target who fits the club's new strategic direction. Speaking to the club's official website, Koppen said: 'Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target. For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence. Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge.'

International quality in the second tier

The transfer stands out even more because of Engels' profile and recent numbers. The Belgium international - who has four caps for his country - is coming off an outstanding season with Celtic, making 46 appearances in all competitions last term and producing seven goals and eight assists. That standard of quality is uncommon in the Championship, and his capacity to dictate the tempo in midfield while also offering defensive cover makes him an important asset for a team expected to dominate possession this season.

Engels himself appears completely focused on the challenge ahead, recognising the pressure that comes with a record transfer fee while keeping his attention on the shared aim of returning to top-flight football. Speaking about his move to the capital, Engels said: 'It's a really nice project to come into. To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal. It's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it's going to be a good year.'

Engels is West Ham's fourth arrival of the summer after the signings of Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, and Israeli winger Manor Solomon. As the Hammers prepare to begin their first Championship campaign since 2012 away to Burnley on Sunday, fans may have to wait before seeing their record signing on the pitch, with the versatile Belgian likely to make his debut in the London Stadium derby against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, August 22.
