Arsenal are continuing their efforts to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Even so, a transfer now looks improbable, with the 26-year-old having rejoined training with his club.
Alvarez had missed a number of sessions because of illness, but he has now returned to full group training.
The forward has made it known that his long-term ambition is to move to Barcelona, but Atletico are unwilling to sell him to a direct rival.
That said, they have indicated they would be open to considering a substantial offer from Arsenal.
Alvarez has informed manager Mikel Arteta that he does not want to join the Premier League champions.
Arsenal have already spent heavily to strengthen their squad this summer. They brought in Christos Tzolis last month before going on to complete deals for Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa.
The Gunners remain keen to add a marquee forward and have identified Alvarez as a leading target.
The Argentina international is regarded as one of the finest forwards in world football, with his game built around relentless work rate, sharp finishing and strong tactical intelligence.
He primarily plays as a striker, though he is also capable of operating on either flank.
With only two days remaining in the transfer window, Arsenal appear unlikely to get a deal for Alvarez over the line.
Arsenal had earlier targeted Vinicius Junior as well, but he eventually signed a new contract with Real Madrid.
