Manchester United revive interest in Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill amid backline concerns - report

Manchester United have Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui as options at right-back, but the club have still been linked with adding further cover in that position in recent times. Michael Carrick has also used Leny Yoro there lately, although the Frenchman, whose natural role is at centre-back, has found the shift in duties difficult.

The Red Devils had been expected to bring in a new left-back this summer, both to provide cover for Luke Shaw and eventually succeed him, with the England international now in the final year of his contract. However, the club finished the summer window without signing anyone for that role.

Although the need for a new right-back is not as pressing, there is a feeling that United require an upgrade there if they are to challenge the top sides in Europe. An earlier report carried by The Peoples Person had indicated that the Red Devils looked at a move for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill during the summer.

That transfer did not materialise, but it now seems the English side have not abandoned hope of bringing the 23-year-old to Old Trafford.

According to Fussball News, United have renewed their interest in Pubill. The report says: “According to information from fussball-news.de, Arsenal FC, Manchester United, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC are on the list of interested clubs.”

“Whilst no concrete negotiations are currently taking place, the English clubs are continuing to monitor Pubill closely.”

The report adds that Arsenal tried to prise the Spaniard away from Atletico Madrid but were unsuccessful. While Los Rojiblancos remain unwilling to sanction his departure, that has done little to put off the player’s Premier League admirers.

Pubill left Almeria to join Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2025 and enjoyed a respectable first season. He recorded one goal and one assist in 36 appearances across all competitions, featuring both at right-back and at centre-back.

Pubill’s natural position is right-back, but he is also comfortable operating as the right-sided centre-back. The report says his versatility has made him an attractive option for United, adding: “Manchester United are also keeping an eye on the 23-year-old.”

“As part of the overhaul under Michael Carrick, the Red Devils are on the lookout for versatile defenders. Pubill’s physical attributes and his ability to play in several positions make him an interesting long-term option.”

However, Atletico Madrid view the player as an important part of their plans and would only consider letting him leave for a huge fee. The report concludes: “According to information from fussball-news.de, Atlético regard the defender as a key part of their future plans.”

“Should the club even agree to enter into talks about a sale, any interested party would have to dig deep into their pockets. A transfer fee of between 55 and 60 million euros is currently being mooted as a possible basis for negotiations. In addition, performance-related bonus payments and other contractual elements could play a role.”

United are expected to prioritise strengthening their defence in 2027, with the side already having conceded six goals in their first three matches of the season. Pubill’s profile makes him an excellent candidate for the role, though taking him away from the Metropolitano Stadium will be far from straightforward.

The Peoples Person Reliability Assessment Overall credibility: 5/10 Why?

✅ Marc Pubill has previously been linked with United. ⚠️ The source is not an established outlet for United news. ⚠️ There are no indications from the club that they will make a move for Pubill next.

TPP view United are keeping tabs on promising players from around the world and it is entirely possible that Pubill has admirers at Old Trafford. However, we believe it is still too early to suggest that the Red Devils will move for the Spaniard in the near future.
