This scheme will provide government assistance to eligible families for building, buying, or renting homes. Consider the example of Ramesh, who lived in a small room in Delhi and did not own a permanent house. Under PMAY-U 2.0, he received government aid to build a safe, permanent home for his family. Now, his family can live with dignity.

Housing benefits for one crore families

The Central Government has set a target to provide housing on a massive scale under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0. The scheme entails a total investment provision of ₹10 lakh crore, with the government contributing ₹2.30 lakh crore in assistance. The objective is to provide affordable housing to eligible families residing in urban areas.

Government assistance for home construction, purchase, or rental

PMAY-U 2.0 is being implemented across four main components: beneficiary-led house construction, affordable housing in partnership, affordable rental housing, and an interest subsidy scheme. This means eligible families can avail benefits for building, buying, or renting a home based on their specific needs and eligibility criteria.

Priority for homeless urban families

The scheme primarily benefits urban families who do not own a permanent house anywhere in the country. Eligible families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low-Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Group (MIG) fall within the scope of the scheme. The specific beneficiaries and the extent of assistance provided will be determined according to the scheme’s established guidelines.

Promoting Home Ownership for Women

PMAY-U 2.0 prioritizes women’s housing rights. According to the government, a significant number of housing units are being allotted in the names of women under the scheme. This not only provides families with permanent homes but also strengthens women’s stake in property ownership.

Lakhs of Homes Sanctioned Under the Scheme

It is gratifying to note that lakhs of urban families have secured permanent housing. By February 2026 alone, over 13.61 lakh homes had been approved, demonstrating the scheme’s success. Subsequently, in June 2026, approval was granted for an additional 2.13 lakh homes. By August 2026, the total number of approved houses under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 had surpassed 1.25 crore.

Nationwide Expansion of the Scheme

The scheme is also being implemented in Rajasthan, where technical arrangements and city-level activities for PMAY-U 2.0 are progressing. Technical teams are being constituted at both state and city levels to facilitate the scheme’s execution. This will assist in extending benefits to eligible beneficiaries and monitoring housing projects.

Before availing the scheme’s benefits, applicants should gather information regarding their eligibility and the required documentation.
