Erling Haaland looks made for record-breaking and, after his latest Champions League performance, another milestone is firmly within reach.

Haaland scored both of Manchester City’s goals in their 2-0 victory over Porto on matchday one of their Champions League campaign, taking his tally in the competition to 59 goals.

His first eight Champions League goals came for Red Bull Salzburg, the next 15 arrived with Borussia Dortmund, and the remainder have been scored for City.

Following his brace against Porto, Haaland has now drawn level with Andriy Shevchenko for Champions League goals. That is impressive company for a player still only 26.

But there is an even bigger target now in his sights. Haaland needs just one more goal to wipe out two records currently held by Lionel Messi.

At present, Messi holds the records for reaching 60 Champions League goals at the youngest age and in the fewest matches.

Messi was aged 26 years and 86 days when he scored his 60th Champions League goal, doing so in his 80th appearance in the competition.

Haaland is currently 26 years and 50 days old, which gives him one final opportunity to beat Messi’s mark as the youngest player to 60 goals. By the time City play their next Champions League match, against PSG on October 14, he will be 26 years and 85 days old — one day younger than Messi was when he reached the landmark.

Scoring against PSG is likely to be a tougher task than scoring against Porto, but with Haaland, it is never wise to rule anything out.

Even if he misses out on that age record, he will still have a much larger margin to go after Messi’s other mark. Haaland has scored 59 Champions League goals in only 59 matches, whereas Messi needed 80 games.

That means City’s number nine has another 20 matches to break that record, or 21 to equal it. In theory, that could leave him until next season, although it would be no surprise if he got there much sooner.

Whenever it happens, it would simply extend a familiar pattern in Haaland’s career. He already holds the records for the fewest matches needed to reach 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 Champions League goals. Reaching 60 should not be an issue either.
