For the last 10 years, there has been an emphasis on promoting electric mobility in India. For this, the government had started FAME I and FAME II subsidy scheme, after which now the government has launched PM E-DRIVE scheme, in which subsidy will be provided on the purchase of electric vehicles.

Amidst all this, there is a small country in Europe called Norway which has left all the countries behind in terms of electric mobility. In fact, recently the data of Global EV Outlook 2024 has come out, which states that in Norway, 9 out of every 10 cars are purchased as electric.

9 out of 10 cars are electric cars

Norway, a country with a population of 5.5 million in Europe, has become the first country in the world to have more electric vehicles than petrol vehicles. Out of the total 2.8 million vehicles registered here, 7,54,303 (26.3%) are fully electric, while petrol vehicles are 7,53,905. Diesel cars are also 9,99,715 (35%), but their sales are continuously decreasing. 9 out of every 10 cars sold here are EVs. In August, 94.3% of the new cars were electric, which is a new record. EVs have been sold in Norway since 1990. In 20 years, 1 million petrol cars have been removed from the roads. EVs have replaced them.

Why did electric car sales increase in Norway?

The Norwegian government started a policy to promote electric cars as an alternative to petrol and diesel cars since 1990. For this, the Norwegian government offered incentives for switching to EVs, in which a discount was given on purchasing EVs. Apart from this, electric cars in Norway get toll free and free parking facilities. At the same time, the government has provided free charging stations across the country.

Demand for electric cars in India

The demand for electric cars in India is continuously increasing. In the financial year 2023-24, a total of 16,75,800 EVs were sold in the country. Which was 42 percent more than the previous financial year. The government is planning to increase the share of EVs in the country to 30 percent by 2030. For this, the government is bringing many schemes from time to time.
