Every fast and festival has special significance in Hinduism, and Pitru Paksha is also one of those important events. During this time, there is a special belief that ancestors come to earth and offering tarpan to them maintains happiness and peace in the family. During Pitru Paksha, tarpan and shraddha are performed to the ancestors, so that with their blessings the family members remain happy and prosperous. This period is dedicated to the peace and satisfaction of the soul of the ancestors, and observing it establishes positive energy and balance in the house.

During Pitru Paksha, people perform Shradh and Tarpan of their ancestors according to the date. During this ritual, water is given through the thumb, seeing which many people have a question in their mind that what is the reason behind this. According to Agnipuran, offering water to the ancestors through the thumb during Pitru Paksha satisfies their soul. According to the rules of worship, the part of the palm located below the thumb is considered as Pitru Teerth. Offering water with the thumb ensures that the water reaches the Pindas directly, which gives satisfaction and peace to the soul of the ancestors.

Thus, the tradition of offering water through the thumb aims to provide peace to the souls of ancestors and make them happy. This tradition plays an important role in the rituals of Pitru Paksha, which is performed with reverence and respect for the peace of the souls of ancestors.

There is also a belief about the tradition of offering water with the thumb that if water is offered with any other finger, it does not reach the ancestors. It is believed that water reaches the ancestors only due to the special position of the thumb and the religious significance associated with it. If water is offered with any other finger other than the thumb, it does not reach the ancestors properly, due to which the ancestors are unable to get food and water.
