New Delhi: Dengue cases are on an upward spiral across multiple places in India, with Tamil Nadu reporting about 14,000 cases and seven deaths in just nine months, this is the highest number of cases in the past seven years.
Following this, dengue cases are steadily rising in Panchkula with over 500 incidences reported as of September 21, on the other hand, Mohali is no less as they reported 194 cases and Chandigarh reported 25 cases. If we talk about Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow recorded about three dozen cases, the majority of the cases have been reported between August and September. Amid this, health officials have urged people to be safe and take extra precautions like keeping the environment clean, not keeping water stagnant near you and more. Dengue is a deadly vector-borne infection spread through infected mosquitoes. The infection can deplete the immune system and make a person weak so much so that it can even kill an individual. But having a good diet can help, incorporating immune-boosting foods such as vitamin C-rich fruits may help. In conversation with News9, Bharathi Kumar, Dietician, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore listed five healthy foods that are best for boosting immunity and helping safeguard yourself from the deadly infection. 5 healthy foods to boost immunity 1. Citrus Fruits: Boost Your White Blood Cell Count Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are rich in Vitamin C, which plays a vital role in increasing white blood cell production. This helps your body fight off infections, including dengue. Vitamin C also enhances the body’s antioxidant defence, protecting cells from damage. Include citrus fruits in your diet to keep your immune system strong. 2. Green Leafy Vegetables: Antioxidant Powerhouses Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and broccoli are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients help boost immunity and protect against infections. They’re particularly high in Vitamin E, which shields cells from damage and supports immune function. Make green leafy veggies a staple in your meals to fortify your immune system. 3. Papaya: A Nutritional Powerhouse Papaya is an excellent fruit for immune system support. It’s rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and an enzyme called papain, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Papaya also contains potassium, which is essential for healthy immune function. Include papaya in your diet to reap its immune-boosting benefits. 4. Turmeric: Harness the Power of Curcumin Turmeric contains Curcumin, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. Curcumin helps boost immunity and shield against infections. Add turmeric to your meals or consume it as a supplement to harness its immune-boosting effects. 5. Yogurt: Probiotics for Gut Health Probiotic-rich yoghurt supports gut health, where immunity begins. Probiotics enhance immune cell function, regulate inflammation, and boost overall immune system performance. Include yoghurt in your diet to support your gut health and immunity. Additional tips to boost immunity:
  • Stay hydrated
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get enough sleep (7-8 hours)
  • Manage stress
  • Include other immune-boosting foods like ginger, garlic, and sweet potatoes in your diet
While a healthy diet is essential, it’s not a guarantee against dengue. Prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around your home. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice.
