Choosen from a list of 29 films, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a playful parody on patriarchy that includes hits like ‘Animal’ from Bollywood, ‘Aattam’, the winner of the Malayalam National Award, and ‘All We Imagine As Light’ from Cannes.
“Laapataa Ladies,” which was produced by Aamir Khan and Rao, was unanimously chosen by the 13-member select committee, which was chaired by Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, to be considered for the Academy Awards’ best foreign picture category. The list also included the Hindi films “Swatantraya Veer Savarkar” and “Article 370,” the Telugu films “Kalki 2898 A’D” and “HanuMan,” and the Tamil film “Maharaja.” For those out of the loop, ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ is the Malayalam smash hit that came out last year.
