The Indian team received congratulations from batting great Sachin Tendulkar after winning two gold medals in the FIDE Chess Olympiad in the men’s and women’s divisions.

India had a stunning showing in the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest on Sunday, winning gold in the women’s and men’s divisions.

Two Gold Medals, One Country! “We’re proud of our men’s and women’s teams for winning the first round of the Chess Olympiad in 2024,” Sachin wrote on X, wishing the Indian squad well.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the head of the Congress, also sent her best wishes to the Indian team, stating that the nation is proud of them.

Indian chess players made history in the Olympiad. In the open division, the men’s team took home the gold medal for the first time. In the women’s division, the Indian team has also won gold for the first time. To all the athletes and team members, many congratulations. We are all very proud of you around the nation. Priyanka wrote on X, “Jai Hind.”

The men’s team from India, which included Pentala Harikrishna, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, D Gukesh, and R Praggnanandhaa, won over Slovenia to take home the gold medal. India had a 2-0 lead after wins by Gukesh and Erigaisi. Praggnanandhaa’s subsequent win and Vidit’s tie meant that India would win the gold medal with a 3.5-0.5 score.

In the meantime, the Indian women’s team, which included Tania Sachdev, Divya Deshmukh, R Vaishali, Harika Dronavalli, and Vantika Agarwal, defeated Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5 to win gold. Vaishali won her match, but Harika, Divya, and Vantika all won.

The women’s team improved upon their first-ever bronze medal from the 2022 Chennai Olympiad.

The two bronze medals India won in the 2014 and 2022 Chess Olympiads are among its greatest results to date. But in 2020, at COVID-19, India and Russia shared the gold in an online Olympiad.
