A committee of the Film Federation of India selected 'Laapta Ladies' as the official entry for the Oscars 2025 from a list of 29 films. This list of 29 films also included films like 'Aattam', 'Kalki 2898 AD' and 'Animal'.
Assamese filmmaker and director Jahnu Barua led the jury team of the Film Federation of India. In an interview given to the Indian Express, Jahnu Barua revealed why 'Laapata Ladies' was chosen.
During the interview, when Jahanu was asked why 'Lapata Ladies' was chosen for the official entry, she said, "The jury has to see the right film which represents India on every front. Especially that film should show the social system of India and the nature here. Indianness is very important and 'Lapata Ladies' did very well on this front."
Jahanu Barua further said, “It is important that the most accurate film representing India is sent as the official entry to the Oscars. There may be a better film than the 29 nominated films. But the jury can only choose from the list given to them, right? In such a situation, the jury team found Missing Ladies most deserving for this title.”
