The Kerala High Court rejected Malayalam actor Siddique's anticipatory bail application in a rape case on Tuesday. Following the decision, Siddique went missing and the police were unable to locate him at his residence.
His mobile phones were also found switched off, prompting authorities to issue a lookout notice at airports and other points of exit. The case against Siddique, filed by an actress, alleges that he raped her at a state-owned hotel in 2016 after she refused to provide sexual favours in exchange for a role in a Tamil movie. The actress initially hesitated to come forward but later emailed the state police chief with her allegations. This complaint comes in the wake of the Justice Hema Committee report, which has shed light on the exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry. Siddique, who had recently been elected General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), resigned following the accusations. His defence claims that the actress had been harassing him since 2019, making repeated allegations of inappropriate behaviour before escalating them after the committee report. The Kerala Police, under pressure due to the growing number of complaints of exploitation in the industry, is expected to submit an action taken report to the High Court soon. In the meantime, the state's Left government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is pushing for Siddique's arrest. The Justice Hema Committee report has sparked a broader investigation into misconduct within the industry, resulting in multiple FIRs being filed against prominent figures, including actors Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Mukesh Madhavan, and directors Ranjith and Prakash. While some have secured relief from the courts, Siddique's bail rejection marks the first significant arrest attempt in the wake of the report.
