Hong Kong director Ricky Lau and friends organized a memorial service for late martial arts actor Norman Chui, with his son handling condolence donations.

According to HK01the service took place on Sept. 21 at the Buddha Hall of Dazhi Zen Temple near Hengdian Film Studios in Zhejiang Province, China.

Lau and several colleagues arranged the ceremony as a tribute to Chui and his wife. The condolence money, given voluntarily, was used to cover memorial costs, with the remaining funds given to Chui’s son, Edward Chui, from his previous relationship with Shirley Yim.

Norman Chui passed away on Sept. 1 at the age of 74 due to esophageal cancer. His wife, a dancer from mainland China who was 30 years younger, tragically passed away shortly after from a heart attack.

A close friend revealed that in his final years, Chui was very active in his career, frequently traveling between Zhejiang and Beijing for film projects. He never had health checkups and only discovered his illness in its late stages, according to 8days.

Chui gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s for portraying martial arts heroes in films, later shifting to villain roles in the 1990s, including a notable appearance in “King of Beggars” alongside Stephen Chow.

During this period, Chui focused his career on the mainland Chinese market, rarely returning to Hong Kong or participating in local productions.

Chui first married in 1975 and had a son, but the couple divorced in 1979. He remarried the following year, but that marriage ended after an affair. In 2004, Chui married his third wife, a mainland Chinese dancer, with whom he had a daughter and a son.
