Vomiting during travelling: For some people the Urdu word 'safar' actually becomes the English word 'safar' as they complain of vomiting and dizziness during travelling, what can they do in such a situation?

Who is more at risk of motion sickness: Motion sickness is also known as 'travel sickness'. When we are in a vehicle, such as a car, bus, boat or plane and we feel dizziness, nausea and vomiting during the journey, it is called motion sickness. This is the reason why many people are afraid to travel.

Why does motion sickness occur?

The biggest cause of motion sickness is the imbalance of brain sensations. When we are in a moving vehicle or object, our eyes see the static scene, while our ears and other senses of the body sense the motion. This imbalance creates confusion in the brain, which causes motion sickness. Young children are often at risk for motion sickness as their brains and nervous systems are developing.

Who are at greater risk?

Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, children as well as women are more likely to suffer from motion sickness. Additionally, people suffering from diseases like migraine are more prone to motion sickness. Elderly people can also be affected by this.

What to do to avoid this?

To avoid motion sickness, sit near the driver's seat or near the wing when flying, if possible. You feel refreshed by opening the window or turning on the AC in the car during travelling. This will give you relief. Avoid reading books or playing games on mobile while travelling, as this can further confuse the mind. Instead, listen to music or have a light conversation.

Apart from this, eat light food before starting the journey. Avoid eating heavy and spicy food. If you often suffer from motion sickness, consult a doctor. Keep some medicines with you, so that you can get relief from this problem. Drinking ginger tea can also provide relief. These natural ingredients help calm the mind. However, one should not remain hungry during the journey, otherwise this problem may increase. By taking care of small things, you can control motion sickness and enjoy the journey to the fullest.
