Bollywood celebs live a lavish lifestyle and it’s no secret that they own beautiful houses and bungalows. Whether it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat or Shatrughan Sinha’s Ramayan these actors have not only built their names in the industry but also crafted stunning homes. Many of these grand residences are located in Mumbai and have even become popular tourist attractions. However before these modern homes became famous there was one actor whose house was the centre of attention in the city. That actor was none other than Rajesh Khanna and his home was the picturesque Aashirwad bungalow. Why Was Rajesh Khannas House Aashirwad Called Cursed? Before Aashirwad was owned by any film celebrity it belonged to an Anglo-Indian family. Located on Carter Road next to the Arabian Sea the bungalow was a sight to behold. In the 1950s the first celebrity to purchase the property was Bharat Bhushan. At the time Bharat had starred in hits such as Baiju Bawra Mirza Ghalib Gateway of India and Barsaat Ki Raat which earned him fame. There was a time when Bharat Bhushan was considered a competitor to actors like Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. However after purchasing the house Bharat experienced a sharp decline in his career. He fell into debt and lost his stardom. To sustain his lifestyle he had to sell the bungalow. This led to rumours that the house was cursed and that those who bought it faced misfortune. Why Was Aashirwad Called the Bhoot Bungalow of Bollywood? In the 1960s rising star Rajendra Kumar discovered the abandoned bungalow on Carter Road which was rumoured to be haunted. Drawn to the low price for such a prime location he purchased it and named it after his daughter Dimple. On the advice of his friend Manoj Kumar he held a puja to dispel the supposed curse on the house. Much like Bharat Bhushan Rajendra initially enjoyed success after moving in. However by 1968-69 he encountered financial difficulties as his films flopped and his other investments turned sour becoming another victim of the houses ill-fated history. Rajesh Khanna Loved Aashirwad In the 1970s Rajesh Khanna decided to purchase the house. During this period the actor delivered an incredible streak of 17 back-to-back hits. With such a record many believed Rajesh Khanna would remain on top. However his stardom soon declined and it all happened rather quickly. By 1975 Rajesh Khanna’s films were no longer performing well at the box office while Amitabh Bachchan’s movies were dominating. It wasn’t just his professional life that suffered; his personal life took a hit as well. His wife Dimple Kapadia separated from him and left him alone. Rajesh Khanna continued to live in Aashirwad until his final days in 2011 further reinforcing the cursed label attached to the house. In 2014 the iconic Aashirwad was sold to an industrialist who demolished the property. With the bungalow reduced to ruins a significant piece of Bollywood history faded into dust.
