Shubhangi Devi, who is an elderly woman and whose weight is also less than normal, underwent successful hip replacement surgery on both her hips which is said to be rare in itself. Now the patient can walk again

Bilateral Hip Replacement Surgery: Hip replacement surgery is a difficult task in itself, many people are afraid of getting this operation done, because they fear that if some complication comes up, they may have to be bedridden for life, so they spend their whole life with pain. There is a lack of awareness about this in India. If the right treatment is available, not only is a successful surgery possible but a new life can also be achieved.

The patient was troubled by pain

A case has come to light in Delhi which brings hope for people suffering from arthritis and other joint pains. 65-year-old Shubhangi Devi, who originally hails from Gorakhpur, a city in UP, now lives in Rithala, Delhi. She complained of severe pain in both hips because she also had arthritis due to growing age.

Got a new life after surgery

The team of Dr Ashwani Maichand, Director of Orthopaedics, CK Birla Hospital Delhi, performed a successful bilateral hip replacement surgery on Shubhangi Devi and after the treatment, the patient can now walk again. Before this surgery, a wheelchair was her only support. One day her condition deteriorated and then it became very challenging for the medical team to cure her.

The surgery was risky

Dr. Ashwini said that the biggest risk was of bone fracture during surgery because her bones had become very weak, she was also suffering from calcium deficiency and osteoporosis. Not only this, her bones were brittle, soft and of small size and low calcium content, due to which placement of the implant became very difficult. The patient's condition was critical and her weight was only 23 kg, in such a situation, Dr. Ashwini Maychand's medical team chose Minimally Invasive Surgery i.e. MIS as the best option for her treatment.

What is minimally invasive surgery?

In minimally invasive surgery, small incisions are made and advanced techniques are used which cause minimal tissue damage, meaning the patient suffers less pain after the operation, recovery is also faster and they are able to return to their normal routine in a very short time. Two surgeries were done on Shubhangi Devi, the first was done on the right hip and the second on the left hip. The operation took one hour. Since the patient was very old, using anesthesia was also risky, but the doctors overcame every such challenge and made the patient capable of walking within a week.

Challenging Task

Giving more information about this, Dr. Ashwini Maychand told the media, “This case was very different and challenging because the patient was extremely underweight, which made his dual hip replacement surgery extremely rare. The biggest challenge was the fracture of his osteoporotic bones as these bones were very fragile and small in size. We prepared for the surgery very carefully and successfully performed it without any complications.

This achievement is a testament to the capability of our team and the advanced care our hospital provides to patients. Post-operative care of such patients is also very important. Apart from regular follow-up, proper diet and physiotherapy are very important for the longevity of their implants and the health of the patient. We are completely confident of Shubhangi Devi's complete recovery and her leading a pain-free and self-dependent life in the future.”

The right treatment came after a lot of trouble

Shubhangi Devi told Zee News that she went to many places for her treatment, a lot of money was spent but she could not get the right treatment. One day her son Ram got information about Dr. Ashwini on YouTube and then contacted the hospital, and after the surgery the patient is feeling a lot of relief.

'India's first such surgery with low weight'

Dr. Ashwini Maychand has claimed that this is the first bilateral hip replacement surgery in India which was successful in such a low weight (23 kg). The treatment of Shubhangi Devi cost around Rs 4.5 lakh, but today she can breathe a sigh of relief because she has got a new life.
