Dhunuchi dance is performed on the occasion of Durga Puja, which is one of the traditional dances. In this special dance, women or dancers dance while balancing a vessel called Dhunuchi on their head. This is not an easy dance because in this Dhunuchi is a vessel made of clay, in which incense, coconut coir and other havan materials are burnt. , which gives off a very captivating fragrance. The Goddess is pleased with this Dhunuchi. Here Durga Puja starts from Saptami and continues till Mahanavami day during which dance is performed. The dancers dance in different postures while balancing the Dhunuchi on their heads, which looks quite attractive. Many people even dance by holding it with their mouth.
There is a popular story behind Dhunuchi dance here. It is said that, Goddess Durga performed the Dhunuchi dance to further enhance her powers before killing Mahishasura. From then onwards this dance was started, which the devotees have been performing till date. Apart from this, there is also a belief that the incense and rice burnt in Dhunuchi pleases Goddess Durga.
Here the way of dancing Dhunuchi is different, to do this people hold a burning Dhunuchi in one or both their hands and dance in different postures.
