After learning that my family hadn’t fully accepted our relationship and that I am owing the bank VND1 billion (US$40,372) for purchasing a house, my girlfriend asked to break up.

We’ve been in a relationship for more than three years, during which I often brought her home to meet my family over the past two years. I even urged my family to get to know her.

Despite these visits, my family has been hesitant to accept our relationship, mainly due to her job. I’ve repeatedly told them that decisions about love and marriage are mine to make, and they agreed.

When my girlfriend asked if I wanted to marry her, I said yes, but I also explained the challenges we were facing. The biggest ones being my family’s reluctance and the house loan I’m paying off.

I hoped she would stand by me and help overcome these difficulties upon hearing this. Instead, she chose to end the relationship. She explained that my family’s disapproval would make life difficult if we were to marry.

I should mention that I had already set a timeline, planning to prepare for the wedding by the end of the year, as I’m now 30. Now that she’s decided to walk away, what should I do?
