In Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, a brother and sister are said to have wed in order to get government perks meant for newlyweds from the lower socioeconomic strata of society. The scam was discovered as a result of resident complaints.

The local SDM responded to the complaint by ordering an inquiry into the situation. A number of people in Sikandra Rao have taken advantage of the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana program, which was created to aid low-income couples by offering marriage-related financial support.

The program provides the bride with cash assistance of Rs 35,000, as well as Rs 10,000 worth of necessities and an extra Rs 6,000 for wedding-related costs. Media sources state that the strategy resulted in the remarriage of two married couples and that the area was rocked by the marriage of a brother and sister.

The locals claim that a municipal employee set up these fictitious unions in order to profit from the communal marriage program. The public has been promised a thorough inquiry and suitable punishment for anyone found guilty by SDM Ved Singh Chauhan.

At a mass wedding ceremony in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, on January 25, more than 200 couples are accused of taking part in fictitious marriage ceremonies earlier in February of this year. In relation to the purported fraud, the police have so far detained 15 persons, including Social Welfare Department personnel.

Investigation findings showed that more than 200 couples were paid to play the roles of bride and groom.
