New Delhi: Indian pace bowler Arundhati Reddy has been reprimanded for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Womens T20 World Cup 2024 match against Pakistan. The incident occurred in the final over of the first innings when Reddy dismissed veteran batter Nida Dar and directed an aggressive send-off gesture towards her pointing to the pavilion. This action breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct which prohibits using language actions or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal during an International Match. This has hence given Reddy an additional demerit point aside from receiving a formal reprimand. This is Reddys first offense within 24 months and the charges were brought forth by on-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Lauren Agenbag third umpire Jacquline Williams and fourth umpire Claire Polosak. Reddy pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the proposed sanction by Shandre Fritz of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of official reprimand while the maximum penalty can be up to 50 per cent of the players match fee and up to two demerit points. This restricted Pakistan to a modest total of 105 runs which proved enough for India to win the match by six wickets. Reddy was pretty impressive as she dismissed Nida Dar Omaima Sohail and Aliya Riaz allowing the Indian team to begin the match in proper fashion. Nida Dars dismissal was a pivotal moment in the match as the seasoned Pakistani batter was aiming to add crucial runs for her team during the final overs. Dar who was Pakistans top scorer with 28 runs off 34 balls tried to play a big shot but misjudged it leading to Reddy knocking over her stumps. The intense nature of the rivalry heightened Reddys reaction resulting in an overly charged celebration that ultimately led to disciplinary action. The video of the incident swiftly circulated on social media eliciting mixed reactions from fans. Despite the controversy Reddys outstanding performance was instrumental in securing Indias victory on the day.
