New Delhi: Megan Schutt claimed three wickets to become the leading wicket-taker in the history of the women’s T20 World Cup as Australia thrashed New Zealand by 60 runs in the Group A encounter on Tuesday. The Aussie batters, bating first, scored sufficient runs on a slow wicket for a comprehensive win over the Kiwis.
The Australia side scored 148/8 in the stipulated 20 overs and successfully restricted the Kiwis to a paltry total of 88 in 19.2 overs to bag their second successive win in the tournament. Opener Beth Mooney top-scored with a 32-ball 40 while Ellyse Perry chipped in with a 24-ball 30. Alyssa Healy contributed 26 in 20 deliveries at the top of the order.
In reply, New Zealand could not put up a good show and were all out for just 88 runs as Schutt returned with excellent figures to push them against the wall. The seasoned Aussie bowler claimed 3/3 in 3.2 overs while Annabel Sutherland (3/21) and Sophie Molineux (2/15) were the other major wicket-takers for Australia. With this result, the dominant Australia grabbed the top spot in Group A with two wins from as many as matches.
After opting to bat first, Phoebe Litchfield, apart from the top three, scored 18 runs adding to the overall team total. For the Kiwis, Amelia Kerr picked up 4/26 while Rosemary Mair and Brooke Halliday claimed two wickets apiece. During the chase for the Kiwis, Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr were the only contributors with scores of 20 and 29 respectively.
For Aussies, Annabel Sutherland again proved to be brilliant as she claimed three wickets while Sophie Molineux picked two wickets. Georgia Wareham and Tahlia McGrath contributed with a wicket apiece.
