According to mythology, there was a demon named Rakta Beej who endangered the lives of not only humans but also the gods. Rakta Beej was blessed with the boon that as soon as a drop of his blood fell on the earth, another demon like him would be born. The gods were very sad about this. All the gods approached Lord Shankar with their problems, then on the request of Lord Shankar, Goddess Parvati took the form of Goddess Kalratri with her powers. When the war started between Maa Kalratri and Rakta Beej, the Goddess used to kill him and drink his blood before it fell on the earth. In this form mother was called Kalratri.
