UGC is making big preparations for top doctoral researchers, and may start this initiative soon

If you are thinking of doing PhD then this news is of your use. UGC may soon give good news to the top researcher of PhD. To promote the education sector, UGC will give a "PhD Excellence-Citation" to recognize and honor exceptional research every year in various subjects. This decision was taken in the meeting of the Commission held on 3 October 2024, where UGC has prepared a plan to give 10 citations annually to exceptional PhD scholars in subjects ranging from science and engineering to social sciences and Indian languages.

Selection will be done at two levels

For this, the Commission has proposed a two-level selection process, which includes a screening committee at the university level and a final selection committee at the UGC level. The committee will consider originality, contribution to knowledge, research methodology, clarity, impact and presentation of the thesis in the evaluation.

Increase in research

A UGC study shows that there has been a remarkable increase in the pursuit of research degrees, with PhD admissions doubling from 77,798 in 2010-11 to 161,412 in 2017-18, showing a 10% annual growth rate. The study also gives details of PhDs awarded in various subjects: Humanities: 30%, Engineering and Technology: 26%, Social Sciences: 12%, Indian Languages: 6%, Management: 6%, Agricultural Sciences: 4%, Medical Sciences: 5%, Education: 5%, Commerce: 3%, Foreign Languages: 3%. According to a UGC study, PhD admissions doubled from 77,798 in 2010-11 to 161,412 in 2017-18, reflecting a 10% annual growth rate. This study shows a significant increase in research degree attainment.

Thus, UGC has instituted the "PhD Excellence Citation" to recognize and felicitate winners of various streams every year in an effort to encourage high-caliber research in Indian universities.

UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadeesh Kumar said, "The initiative aims to recognize excellent doctoral research in various disciplines. In line with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes creation and discovery of new knowledge for the future of India, the PhD Excellence Citation is an effort to identify and appreciate research work in the university."
